What's on my energy bill?

Account information & summary

At the top of the first page of your bill, you will find key information about your account, such as your account details, energy usage for that billing period, and payment amount.

You'll notice there's a new Referral Code at the top of your bill. Share this unique referral code with your friends so you can both get a $50 credit* on your energy bills when they sign up with 国产黄色片 Energy! Learn more about our听Refer a Friend program.

You can avoid extra charges by paying your bill before the date in the "When should I pay?" section.听If for some reason, we need to resend a bill due to rate adjustments or credits that were missed out, 鈥淐ORRECTED / ADJUSTED INVOICE鈥 will appear above your Account Number on this new bill.

Your Account Summary, which has the high-level breakdown of your payment, can be found on the second page of your bill. If you have a balance owing or credit from your previous bill, it will be shown in the 鈥淏alance Forward鈥 line item in your Account Summary.

Distributor & government charges

In this section of your bill, you will find transmission and distribution charges on your electricity bill and delivery charges on your natural gas bill. These charges are associated with the cost of delivering energy to your home as well as the operation and maintenance of energy infrastructure. No matter who you choose to buy your energy from, these fees won't change.听

If you notice a Rate Rider fee on your bill, it is a charge that was approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), enabling distribution companies and regulated retailers to recover actual operational costs that are not included in their monthly approved rates.

These are the government fees on your bill:

  1. Local Access Fee (LAF) on your electricity bill and Municipal Franchise Fee on your natural gas bill - This is a surcharge levied by your municipality through your Distributor. It is not approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission. Contact your Distributor, as shown on your energy bill, to find out how this charge is determined.
  2. Federal Carbon Tax on your natural gas bill - Government of Canada introduced the federal price on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions beginning in January 2019, to provinces or territories that have not implemented a carbon pricing regime. It took effect in Alberta on January 1, 2020 and was designed to increase every April 1, thereafter until 2030. On April 1, 2024, the Federal Carbon Tax rate increased from $3.327/GJ to $4.095/GJ. How much you pay is determined by how much natural gas you use.

Average billing

With regular billing, your energy bill goes up during high-usage months and down in low-usage months. Instead,听Average Billing听鈥痑llows you to pay a rolling average monthly amount, spreading your energy costs throughout the year and making it more manageable.鈥.

If you have signed up for Average Billing, your Account Summary on Page 2 of your bill will show听your actual charges for that month based on your energy usage and your Average Billing Amount, which is due that month.

Micro-generation credit

Did you know that Albertans can generate their own electricity from renewable or alternative energy sources for their property? A micro-generation customer owns a device that converts energy from one form into electrical energy. This could be any renewable energy, most often being solar in Alberta.听Learn more about micro-generation.听 听 听 听 听 听 听 听 听

If you are a micro-generator, you will have an additional line item on your energy bill in the Retailer Charges section called Microgen Credit. This line shows your credit for the energy you returned to the power grid during that billing period. The rate you receive for excess energy sent back onto the grid depends on whether you are a small or large micro-generator:

  • If you are a small micro-generator (under 150 kW), you will be credited at your retail energy rate.
  • If you are a large micro-generator (150 kW鈥痶o 5,000 kW), you will be credited at the average hourly Alberta Pool Price when your electricity returns to the grid.听
